In Donizetti's lively comic opera, The Daughter of the Regiment is Marie, an unsophisticated orphan girl adopted by the regiment of Napolean's army. Maries marriage has been arranged with a decadent and villainous Duke but her heart belongs to one of the soldiers - naturally the idealisic romantic tenor. After much ado, a lot of slaptick comedy, beautiful ensembles and arias, Marie marries her true love.
